Kelantan raked in RM2.3 billion from tourism last year, up from RM1.7 billion in 2009 and RM2 bilion in 2008, said Tourism Malaysia Kelantan director Sulaiman Ismail.

“Tourist arrivals and tourism revenue have been growing at an average of 10 per cent a year in the state.

“Last year, the state recorded 5,326,089 tourist arrivals and tourism revenue of RM2.3 billion compared to 4,368,748 arrivals and revenue of only RM1.7 billion in 2009,” he told Bernama here.

He said tourist arrivals dropped sharply in 2009 due to the world-wide H1N1 scare, which led many tourists to cancel their trips.

Sulaiman said new attractions would be introduced to woo more tourists to the state, citing the Siti Khadijah market, Kota Baharu tourism zone, Taman Negara (National Park) in Kuala Koh, Gua Musang, Gunung Stong, Kuala Krai, the reclining Buddha, Rantau Panjang duty-free zone, Pengkalan Kubor and Wakaf Che Yeh night market.

Last year, some RM18 million was spent on two projects — the construction of the Rantau Panjang market and the Royal Jetty on the Kelantan River in Kota Baharu, he said.

Both projects are fully completed while in the Tenth Malaysia Plan, RM10 million has been allocated for 2011 to 2015 for beautification of the banks of the Kelantan River in Kota Baharu, he added.
