The Perak government will develop the Kledang Saiong Recreational Park in Bandar Meru Raya, here, as a new eco-tourism park. State Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Hamidah Osman said a RM1 million allocation had been approved by the state government for the initial development.

She said this would include building an entrance arch, office and parking bays which were expected to be ready by next February. “The area will be an attractive eco-tourism park as two rivers, the Sungai Sah and Sungai Chepor, flow through it, and its development is timely as 2012 will be Visit Perak Year.

“The natural beauty of this area which is rich in fauna is still intact,” Hamidah said after a working visit to the site with officers from the state Forestry Department and Perak Development Corporaton. Hamidah said the eco-tourism project involved an area of 2,188 hectares and located only about 4.5 kilometres from the Jelapang toll plaza on the North-South Expressway.

Besides being a picnic spot, she said the area could also be a site for camping, permanent lodgings, extreme sports and research. “The whole project is expected to cost RM9 million, and more than 60 per cent of the proposed eco-tourism area is forest reserve and suitable to be gazetted as recreational park. We believe this is a very good investment for the Perak government as the area has the potential to be a major tourist attraction in the state,” she said.

Among Perak”s eco-tourism parks are the Royal Belum in Hulu Perak, Lata Iskandar Recreational Park and Kuala Sepetang Mangrove Forest.
