Accidents will happen, that is how the saying goes. Unfortunately, no one likes accidents, especially if you are on vacation. Imagine, you paid quite a lot of money to travel at least a quarter way around the world, just to end up getting hit by a machine or a large animal while you are relaxing on the beach.

Penang Beach

A beach in Penang. More popularly known as tourism destinations, they are fast becoming infamous as accident sites.

That is definitely not how you would want to happen during your holiday. Unfortunately for a few unlucky tourists, that was exactly what happened to them during their visits to Penang. Penang is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, and now it is also getting infamous for accidents that happen at Batu Ferringhi. The saddest part of the entire thing is, the accidents could have been averted if proper enforcement and if all parties involved can come to an agreement. The funny thing is, every party involved has a stake in ensuring that accidents do not happen as it will affect their livelihood.

Will we see more accidents? Only time will tell. A recent article highlighted a call by the country’s tourism minister concerning this issue.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen has urged the Penang government to pay serious attention to the safety of tourists visiting the state.

The reminder came in the wake of an incident in which a Saudi Arabian tourist, Ali Shamrani, 30, sustained a broken hip and bodily injuries when the jet ski he was riding was hit by another jet ski operated by two Indian nationals at the Batu Feringghi beach in Penang Saturday.

“I have said this before and I will say it again, that the safety of tourists is important to the tourism industry because we have been telling the world that our country is safe and stable.

“So, I would like to remind Lim (Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng) not to poke his nose into other state’s safety affairs, but instead to mind the safety affairs in Penang first.”

She said this to reporters after the opening of the 58th MCA annual general assembly by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at Wisma MCA here Sunday.

If the situation persists, Dr Ng said she was worried that not only Penang’s tourism sector would be jeopardised, the income of local people who were depending on the industry would also be affected.

Hence, she said the Penang government should be firm in enforcing the laws and regulations, besides offering suitable trainings to tour and travel operators to improve their services.

And Yen Yen should follow protocol in the financial dealings in her ministry. A shameless lady to say the least.
