Good news for everyone who needs a doctor in Terengganu. According to a news report, every district hospital in the state of Terengganu is expected to have the services of specialist doctors under the 10th Malaysia Plan. This move to increase specialists in the country not only benefits the nation’s population, but also signals the government’s determination to be a provider of medical and healthcare services in the region. While medical tourism is still very much just a buzzword in the country, it is undeniable that many hospitals, especially those privately owned, have stepped up efforts to promote their medical services.
Medical services offered by hospitals in Malaysia, which has been dubbed by some as ‘medical tourism’, actually is a rapidly growing market, with many patients coming from abroad. According to statistics, a large percentage of these patients are from neighbouring countries, especially Indonesia. The relatively low costs for various procedures when compared to those offered in other developed nations, as well as the skilled medical personnel are often the main factors that motivate many of these patients to choose Malaysia as their medical tourism destination.

While Malaysia may be more well-known for its wildlife, the country's healthcare and medical services is fast gaining popularity.

With the exception of the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu and the Kemaman district hospital, each district hospital in the state is expected to have the services of specialist doctors under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).
Chairman of State Committee for Health, Unity and Consumerism Dr A Rahman Mokhtar said the request for the services of specialist doctors had been forwarded to the Health Ministry, which was already allocated under the 10MP.
He said the specialists required for the district hospitals included in the field of gynecology, paediatrics, surgery and anesthethics.
Dr A Rahman said with the present growth of population, the services of specialist doctors were badly needed in each of the districts in the state.
“At the same time, each district hospital also needs to have the intensive care unit ward, and efforts have been made to request for such wards from the government,” he told reporters after presenting Aidilfitri gifts to Besut District hospital patients on Friday.
He said without specialist doctors at the district hospitals, more than 20 per cent of the high risk cases had to be referred to the Universiti Sains Malaysia hospital in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, and also to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah hospital in Kuala Trengganu.
