It is not every day when you will read about how animal activists will cheer the closing of a zoo, but yet this was the case when a news report highlighted the closing of a privately run zoo in Johor recently. Actually the term zoo might be a stretch as a zoo brings to mind healthy animals in humane enclosures that often come together to present a magnificent impression of the wildlife. This ‘zoo’ in question was anything but such a thing, being reportedly understaffed and not maintained well at all.
The zoo was finally closed down after a local newspaper ran an indepth report that exposed the poor conditions in which the animals were kept in. It is really good to see man finally stepping in to rescue animals who are unable to help themselves. It is sad to see how animals are still abused merely for pure profit, especially when they are supposed to be the main highlight of a zoo.
Malaysia unfortunately is still a long way from being a country famous for its animals, which is a real sad thing as the country is home to many beautiful and unique creatures. Yet till this day there is no zoo in the country that is equal to any of the zoos found in major cities around the world. Perhaps one day in the future there will be such a zoo. We can only hope and look forward to that day.
Where can YOU see live Malaysian animals in a zoo that is of ‘international’ standards?

In an unprecedented operation, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) acted to remove animals at the controversial Saleng Zoo in Kulaijaya here.
The zoo had come under intense scrutiny last month after Starprobe exposed the poor conditions in which the 40 species of animals were kept.
Department deputy director-general Dr Zaaba Zainal Abidin led the raid yesterday with about 80 personnel armed with tranquilliser guns, metal cutters and blowtorches.
Environmental NGOs applauded the department’s action and said they expected this to be the start of better things to come for the animals.
