Terengganu To Attract Tourists With ‘Comel’

While the title might give readers an impression that Terengganu is about to do something cute and cuddly, the simple truth is that Comel is an acronym for the state’s major tourist activities, the Candat Sotong Festival, the Monsoon Cup, the Endurance Challenge and Leisure.

Sailboats all lined up and ready for the Monsoon Cup in Kuala Terengganu

Many people might not realise that Terengganu is actually a state in Malaysia that has the most tourist attractions, including beautiful islands like Redang Island and the Perhentian Islands. These attractions, however, are only visitable during certain periods of the year, as they are affected by the monsoon season. The monsoon season is the reason why the state has decided to add to other events to boost tourism, especially during the monsoon season.

Some of these events, like the Monsoon Cup, have become well known and well supported events while others are still trying to gain enough publicity and support from tourists and locals alike. Not every event will be a popular hit, but that should not deter the state from promoting these interesting activities.

How many of you have experienced what Terengganu has to offer? And which of Terengganu’s lovely destinations is your favourite? Tell us what YOU think.

Terengganu will promote tourism based on core activities under the tagline ‘Comel,’ the acronym for Candat Sotong Festival, Monsoon Cup, Endurance Challenge and Leisure.

Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee Chairman Datuk Abdul Rahin Mohd Said said this was because the government could not promote all tourism activities to tourists.

“Our tourism calendar started with the Candat Sotong Festival launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently,” he told reporters at a retreat programme for the media at Pulau Kapas Sunday night.

Rahin said the candat sotong or squid jigging festival held annually for over 20 years received strong participation from foreign tourists.

“The candat sotong festival is not only held in Kuala Terengganu but also in the other districts of Terengganu.”

He said the candat sotong festival helped to give some business to tourism industry players yet to recover from the monsoon season.

  1. I have many fond memories of my time spent on Pulau Redang.

Except for the interminably long transfer between the airport and the resort which definitely could have been organised better, everything else was perfect.

Highly recommend simply flying to Redang from KL rather than trying to fly, cab and boat it over as the extra expense is more than worth the 15 times I walked up and down the dusty “market” at the pier looking at the same mass-produced souvenirs of puffer fish in the heat of noon.

The activities planned by the resort we stayed at was a non-stop list of snorkeling, shark feeding, food and more food, and the nightclub was stompin’ after dark.

Met some nice people during the trip I still stay in touch with and have great memories of just walking on the beach for hours while the sun set. Will definitely return one day soon to explore the mainland more as well.
