Pet related issues have been quite hot topics in the recent months, especially the two incidents of animal abuse that received intense public scruntiny. The most recent pet news to appear is a missing iguana named Mustang. Strange but seemingly true, this iguana belongs to a flight instructor living in Malacca, Captain Stephen Michael Terry. More popularly known as Malacca’s ‘Iguana Man’, he is offering a reward on information about his loving pet.

The Malacca River side, a favourite haunt for the iguana and his master during better times
It is touching to see how many of us care so much about animals. There are many non governmental organisations that try their best to promote the welfare of animals, both domesticated and wild, in Malaysia. These organisations include the SPCA, the Malaysian Nature Society, and WWF-Malaysia. These organisations run many interesting conservation programs, some of them high profile, like TX2 – Double the Number of Tigers, and others that have a lesser profile, like the many nature talks and outings by the MNS.
How long has it been since you actually had something to do with an animal? Do we have to wait till we see cruel videos of kittens being stomped into the ground to get us to care? Or do we chuckle about how a man can be willing to pay real money for any sort of lead that might reunite him with his pet iguana? How human can we actually be if we don’t even care about animals?
Tell us what YOU think.

MALAYSIAN Flying Academy chief instructor Captain Stephen Michael Terry or popularly known as Malacca’s ‘Iguana Man’ is frantically in search of Mustang, his pet reptile.
The 56-year-old said he will reward anyone with information on his missing lizard.
“I miss him. I have had him on my left shoulder for the past four years. He is my best friend, my soul mate.
“Mustang wouldn’t leave me unless it was for a good reason! One minute he was in my front yard, munching, and the next minute, he’s gone..”
For anyone familiar with seeing a metre-long iguana sitting idly on Stephen’s shoulder is not a rare sight.
A resident of Malacca for six years, he regularly hangout with his slithery buddy at their regular Jonker street haunts.
“I have tried forgetting about Mustang. A friend even offered to place her parrot on my left shoulder, but it doesn’t feel the same,” said the distraught flight instructor.
What would be the first thing he would do, once he has Mustang back on his shoulder?
Stephen said he would make Mustang his favourite meal of bread and hibiscus flowers.
It is learnt that some sources have already come forward to claim their share of the handsome reward informing Stephen of Mustang’s last whereabouts.
Word has it that the iguana was last seen roaming the grounds of the newly-built hotel, the Casa Del Rio Melaka Hotel.
The rumours and whispers of Mustang’s last seen location has definitely riled up some excitement at the new hotel.
Casa Del Rio’s general mmanager Andrew Drummond was empathetic to Stephen’s plight.
“After hearing that Mustang may be here, we have actually set up a hotline to help the owner.
“Everyone, or rather, anything is welcome here and if it feels like home to Mustang, we will help make sure that he is comfortable until he is ready to return to shoulders of Stephen,” said Drummond.
Anyone with information relating to Mustang’s location are urged to contact the Casa Del Rio Melaka Hotel directly at 06 – 6292 1113.
