The trishaw service, once a popular mode of transport in the Kota Baharu town in the 1970s, will be revived through a special initiative to be carried out between the Tourism Ministry and the Kelantan Tourism Department. Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the ministry had discussed the matter with the state tourism department and had agreed to allocate RM10,000 to the Kelantan Trishaw Association to revive the trishaw service as a tourism product.

“We want to revive the use of trishaws and promote the trishaw service as a tourism product,” she told reporters at a Chinese New Year gathering.

She said that under the programme, to be implemented in three months, trishaw riders would be given RM200 each to decorate their trishaws.

Dr Ng, who is also Kelantan MCA chairman, said special courses would also be organised for the trishaw riders to enlighten them on the places of interests along their route so that they would be able to promote them to tourists.

She said the trishaw riders would also be taught basic foreign languages to enable them to communicate with foreign tourists.
