Sarawak’s iconic event, Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) is expected to rake in an estimated RM20 million revenue for the state this year. The annual festival will held for three days, beginning July 8, at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong near here. The capacity at the venue for three nights is 24,000.
Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan said event organiser Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) hoped to attract a crowd of about 21,000 for the three nights.
He said, last year, RWMF generated RM13 million for the local tourism industry, adding that this year, the STB hoped to generate RM20 million.
“We hope to attract more foreign visitors this year as it will generate a bigger amount in tourism receipts,” he told reporters at a press conference on the launch of RWMF 2011 at his office here Friday.
Earlier, Dr Chan, who is state tourism and heritage minister, was briefed by STB corporate communications director Angelina P. Bateman on RWMF 2011.
Participating at the event are groups and artistes from New Zealand, Iran, USA, Eastern Europe, Canada, Finland, Senegal, Mexico, Australia, Latvia, China, India, Ireland, Tunisia, Algeria, Dominician Republic, Italy, Kenya and Poland.
Malaysia will be represented by two groups. However, only Agungbeat has confirmed participation.
