Established in 1982, Karyaneka is a subsidiary of a Malaysian government agency that is entrusted to market Malaysian handicraft and souvenir items produced by the country's cottage industry and skilled craftsmen. Karyaneka's headquarters forms part of the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex, located within the Bukit Bintang area, the capital's premier shopping district. Its wide collection is divided into five distinct categories, forest based, crystal and glass, textile, ceramic, and metal based. The products are spread all throughout its three outlets. The more familiar items are displayed prominently at the souvenir shop, while more expensive and intricately crafted items, most of them metalwork, dominate the corporate gifts shop. The last outlet is a two storey textile boutique showcasing various fabrics and textiles, such as the beautifully handpainted batik and intricately woven songket.
