A unique 3 day gathering is about to take place on the banks of the Sarawak River from 14th to 16th January 2011. Dubbed the Gathering of the Tribes, this expo brings together members of Sarawak’s indigenous tribes, tattoo artists and the general public in a celebration of tribal culture and the rich artistry of tattoos. Organised by Perunding Majujaya, a Sarawak-based event management company, this expo aims to promote a better understanding of the rich cultural tapestry of the tribes living in Sarawak.
The three day event will feature authentic rituals, chants and ceremonies of not only the more commonly known tribes, but also lesser known tribes from the interior. At least 30 tattoo artists from around the world will be attending the expo, including specialists in traditional hand tapping tattoo techniques. Cultural demonstrations such as tribal weaving and ethnic tattoo techniques will also be held, along with lectures and talks by speakers and tribal practitioners. As an added bonus, Lars Krutak, a world renowned tattoo anthropologist will also be attending the event. Lars, who is featured in the series Tattoo Hunter on Discovery Channel, will be exhibiting his photographic works at the event. Visitors interested in taking home a souvenir can browse through a bazaar offering an assortment of tribal products. The expo will be open from 12 noon to 9pm for the entire duration of the event.
The expo will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on the Kuching Isthmus, overlooking the Sarawak River. For further information, check out the official website at www.tribes.com.my.
