Most of us would remember Art as one of the mandatory subjects to take while we were in primary and secondary school. Though many may have performed well in that subject, there were others like myself, who was only too glad when the subject was no longer mandatory. One of the mediums taught during my school days was watercolour. Though many may feel that using watercolours to paint is easy, it only dawned upon me that there is so much more involved other than just getting the right colour and shade.
For instance, did you know that watercolour techniques can only be applied to watercolour? Unlike oil or acrylic painting where the paint stays where they are applied and dries in almost the same manner it is applied, the water component is an active and complex partner in this process. This is because the water changes both the absorbency and the shape of the paper when it is wet and the outlines and appearances of the artwork when it is dry. Another obstacle that many artists may encounter when painting with watercolours is that this type of paint does not have many hiding abilities, therefore mistakes cannot simply be painted over nor scraped off.
For art lovers who have a keen interest in watercolour paintings, the Galeri Petronas will be organising a contemporary watercolour works by 30 accomplished Malaysian artists. This exhibition is called Figure in Paint – Contemporary Watercolour and it seeks to explore the full potential of watercolour by presenting the medium from a different angle through new approaches and ideas. Galeri Petronas wishes to share these inspiring watercolour works that are experimental and rare with the members of the public. This exhibition also seeks to dispel a common misconception that watercolour is only meant for painting quaint pastoral scenes and flowers. This exhibition proves that watercolour can also be effectively applied onto current and contemporary images. Figure in Paint – Contemporary Watercolour will be held from 30th June till 28th August 2011 at the Galeri Petronas.
